Job Description:

Safeguard�s modern facilities are located right in the communities where our customers live. We design every Safeguard with the character of the surrounding neighborhood in mind. We work with the business community and local governments, as well as the general public, to create facilities that everyone is proud to have in their community.

We offer our customers a state of the art facility with high-tech security and climate control. We also provide our customers storage advice (how to estimate the amount of space needed and how to pack a storage unit effectively), materials for moving and storing possessions such as boxes, pads, dollies, etc., moving and packing tips and will accept commercial deliveries without the customer being present.

Currently we are seeking a Senior Vice President of Design and Construction to join our team of professionals. Develop a design prototype for the Safeguard brand that includes interior and exterior design and signage, color, building materials and architectural elements. Manages the construction and design team and partners with the Senior Vice President and Vice President Development to ensure that every project is effectively implemented from conception to completion in a cost efficient manner while maintaining the high quality standards of the Safeguard brand. Identifies and builds relationships with reputable architects and all service providers in Safeguard markets.

Essential Functions:
Design Standards
Develop a design prototype and obtain executive management�s approval.
Communicate the approved design standard to the organization and ensure consistent implementation of design standards across all development projects.
Collaborate with the VP, Design to plan all architectural aspects of development projects.
Design, research and develop better building materials and methods for a refined building prototype to make the building more functional.
Ensure the design elements associated with re-branding existing and acquisition stores are consistent with Safeguards design standards.

New Store Development
Assist in the preparation and negotiation of standard construction contracts and construction documents with contractor.
Collaborate with the Director, Construction in providing required construction information to the closing department.
Partner with Director, Construction to contribute to cost reduction ideas.
Relationship Management
Responsible for identifying and developing the relationship with national vendors and service providers across all markets and training external architects on Safeguard�s design standards.
Develop criteria for vendor selection and apply it consistently in the vendor assessment and selection process.
Develop an evaluation process to assess the performance of all vendors and contractors on an annual basis.
In collaboration with the VP, Design, oversee production of external architects to include design, development and construction.
Inform outside architects about all the architectural aspects of each construction project.
Quality Control
Partner with the Director, Construction to facilitate the pre-construction meeting and value engineering process.
Facilitate the contractor selection and bidding process with input from Director, Construction.
Oversee the inspection process for all development projects for quality and conformance with Safeguard design and brand standards and to contract documents throughout the duration of the project.
Coordinate third party testing for the development project.
Pre-qualify all vendors and contractors.
Establish an on-going process to document all critical functional knowledge/information pertinent to the department to ensure the continued success of the company.
Evaluate the comments received from Operations for possible incorporation into future design standards.
Recruitment/Staff Development
Responsible for the recruitment, development and coordination of the design and construction staff.
Complete an annual performance review and provide regular performance feedback for each direct report.
Qualifications / Skill Requirements:
Bachelor degree in Architecture or Construction
Master degree a plus
A minimum of ten years relevant experience in design and construction management
Previous work experience as a real estate developer
Previous work experience in selecting/managing/directing outside vendors and consultants
Industry experience in multi-location business such as consumer services, lodging, restaurant, retail or multi-family
Previous experience in managing a staff
Previous project management experience
