Job Description:
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is a world leader in science and engineering research, with 11 Nobel Prize recipients over the past 75 years, and 59 present members of the National Academy of Sciences. LBNL conducts unclassified research across a wide range of scientific disciplines and hosts four national user facilities.

Reporting to the Facilities Chief Engineer, perform electrical design assignments for high, medium, and low voltage power distribution systems, buildings, and research laboratories.

Duties:
Report to the Facilities Chief Engineer, performing electrical design assignments for high, medium, and low voltage power distribution systems, buildings, and research laboratories
Develop power system studies/calculations including protective relay coordination studies, NFPA 70E (Standard for Electrical Safety in Workplace) incident energy and limits of approach calculations, select equipment and materials, and provide all required engineering/design for completion of the assigned projects
Provide construction support and system performance verification on highly complex and one-of-a-kind systems
Organize and comply pertinent information for equipment files and databases
Perform or oversee the production of energy-efficiency studies in existing facilities including preparation of project proposals, defining project performance methodology, field measurements of energy flow parameters, development of proposed retrofits, energy savings calculations, retrofit cost estimations, life-cycle cost analysis, and preparation of project reports
Exercise judgment within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques, procedures, and evaluation criteria on all assignments to obtain results
Develop new techniques and methods of accomplishing work more accurately and in less time
Prepare engineering analysis, conceptual designs, design criteria, construction documents, and operating/maintenance information based on programmatic and institutional requirements
Verify system performance through commissioning
Perform complex tasks such as resolving conflicting design requirements, unsuitability of conventional materials, difficult coordination requirements, and value engineering
Independently plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate detailed engineering work to meet project time, cost, and performance requirements for all projects assigned
Develop engineering work consistent with all other design team disciplines
Review work of outside design professional submittals (contract documents) and resolve review comments on construction documents
Perform complete building code compliance checks
Stay informed of the scope, schedule, and cost status of every active project
Maintain a specialty expertise of an electrical design for high, medium, and low voltage power distribution systems for buildings, and research laboratories
Organize and comply pertinent information for maintenance and operation equipment files and databases
Provide support to the building trades construction
Use AutoCAD2002 computer-aided drafting, spreadsheet, and word processing programs to modify standard specifications and details
Develop new, standard reports, CAD details, drawing notes, and equipment and technical specifications to improve the quality and timeliness of services and deliverables
Participate in other related activities (e.g. troubleshooting, consulting, and forensic engineering) as directed by the Chief Engineer

Qualifications:
Valid professional license obtained by written examination to practice Electrical Engineering in the State of California
Substantial relevant experience in preparing construction documents, including but not limited to one line diagrams, control schematic diagrams, lighting, power and grounding plans, specifications, raceways layouts, underground duct bank, connection diagrams, installation details, SCADA, fire alarm, security access, telephone, paging, intercom, and CCTV systems
Thorough knowledge of applicable industry and regulatory standards, National Electrical Code (NEC), safety codes, design standards, and environmental regulations pertinent to the electrical engineering discipline
Portray construction work on drawings that meet functional requirements that are complete, well organized, technically correct, and result in a minimum of change orders
Communicate well both verbally and in writing
Skillful in negotiations, coordination, and conflict management
Substantial relevant experience coordinating the work of other engineering/design disciplines and trades personnel
Proficient with AutoCAD2002 and software applications related to engineering and design tasks
Ability to work in elevated platform and perform occasional fieldwork, at times around hazardous systems and equipment, to inspect construction, equipment, systems, and structures
Recognized degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university is preferred
